Over the past week, a series of leaks regarding the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 design has emerged, capturing the attention of gaming enthusiasts. The intrigue reached new heights yesterday when Dbrand made an unexpected move, unveiling a detailed 3D render of the Switch 2. Interestingly, this render also showcased a redesigned version of Dbrand’s Killswitch carrying case, originally intended for handheld PCs, now fashioned for the Switch 2. In a conversation with The Verge, Dbrand’s CEO, Adam Ijaz, clarified that the company had access to the precise dimensions of the Switch 2, thanks to a 3D scan of the actual hardware. The specs list its dimensions at around 270mm in width with Joy-Cons attached, 200mm without, standing 116mm tall, and a trim 14mm thick.
This new iteration of the Nintendo Switch reportedly boasts a larger 8-inch screen, a notable upgrade from the Switch OLED’s 7.2-inch and the original Switch’s 6.2-inch displays. It appears to include an additional “C” button on the right Joy-Con—possibly for capturing content—and features Joy-Con controllers that can be magnetically detached, sporting a sleeker curve design. Meanwhile, the device comes equipped with USB-C ports at both ends and a robust U-shaped kickstand reminiscent of the improved stand on the Switch OLED.
As we get closer to a potential Q1 2025 launch, the Switch 2 appears to be a significant evolution from its OLED counterpart. However, contrary to previous models, it’s rumored to ditch the OLED screen in favor of a 1080p IPS LCD display, which one can only hope will offer superior quality to past LCD models.
Dbrand’s take on the Switch 2’s Killswitch case design has stirred some excitement as well. Unlike their typical full-body encasements or enhanced kickstands seen with Steam Deck cases, this iteration respects the detachable nature of the Joy-Cons. It cleverly separates into parts and is held together with a teal bungee cord, making for a striking look. With Dbrand’s solid reputation in the protective case market, the final product is expected to be a hit.
For those eagerly anticipating an untainted glimpse of the Switch 2, hang tight. While we don’t quite have a clear image so far, the leaked details align with a 3D-printed model previewed by YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week, offering a sneak peek into what the final design could embody.
This significant leak from Dbrand—unfettered by NDA constraints—signals that an official announcement or even a release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 might be just around the corner. Earlier comments suggested a launch before the end of 2024, and Nintendo aims to unveil further details by March 2025. With just a few months to go, anticipation is building, and companies like Dbrand are already ramping up for the debut of Nintendo’s next big leap in hybrid gaming consoles.
