A seasoned industry analyst has shared some insights suggesting that if the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the market in the first half of 2025, the PlayStation 5 could potentially outsell it in the United States. Mat Piscatella from Circana anticipates that there will be supply shortages lasting several months for Nintendo’s anxiously awaited new console due to its high demand.
### Is It Possible for the PS5 to Outpace Switch 2 Sales in the US?
Piscatella hasn’t provided many details on why he believes the PS5 might surpass the Switch 2 within its initial year, aside from the potential supply constraints and a speculative late 2025 launch. It certainly makes one wonder whether this forecast would change if Nintendo dodges significant hardware bottlenecks.
It’s quite a daring prediction, especially given that the PS5 is moving into the later stages of its lifecycle. However, if the highly anticipated release of GTA 6 happens this year, it could trigger a substantial spike in demand for Sony’s console.
“I’m projecting that Nintendo’s new hardware will sell 4.3 million units in the US in 2025, assuming it launches in the first half of the year. This would account for about a third of all video game consoles sold during that time (excluding PC Portables),” Piscatella shared on Bluesky. “Of course, the number of units sold will depend heavily on manufacturing capabilities. Despite this, I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in overall hardware sales in the US across the year.”
