Ubisoft is postponing Assassin’s Creed Shadows once more, after already shifting its release from last winter to this coming February. Unlike the previous delay, this isn’t as significant but stems from Ubisoft’s recent “strategic and execution reviews.” These reviews are part of the company’s efforts to turn around its recent track record of underwhelming game launches.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to be another sprawling open-world adventure, this time set in feudal Japan. Given Ubisoft’s recent challenges, including the flop of Skull and Bones, the disappointing reception of Star Wars Outlaws, and the struggling FPS title XDefiant, which is being pulled from sale and powered down completely in June, Shadows is shaping up to be crucial for the company’s success.
Initially slated for February 14, many players accepted the first delay for Shadows, understanding the need for extra polishing. However, February is shaping up to be jam-packed with major releases like Civilization 7, Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed, among others. Though Ubisoft hasn’t explicitly mentioned this crowded lineup as a reason, it certainly seems relevant. Officially, the company states that the development team has been allotted “an additional month of development.”
This extra time aims to enhance the game by incorporating the feedback gathered from players over the last quarter. Ubisoft says this adjustment will help ensure the game launches under the best possible conditions while fostering strong connections with the enthusiastic Assassin’s Creed community.
Now, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on Thursday, March 20, giving the developers additional time to refine the game. “We completely support our team’s push to make Shadows the most ambitious installment of the Assassin’s Creed series,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained. “By allowing this extra development month, we intend to integrate more player feedback, fully realize the game’s potential, and finish the financial year robustly.”
