A new plugin called Junk Store has emerged in the Steam Store, which lets you seamlessly run third-party game stores like Epic Games and GOG directly from your Steam Deck’s Gaming Mode. This was spotted thanks to GamingOnLinux. The plugin resembles Decky Loader—a popular open-source plugin launcher for the Steam Deck that allows other developers to integrate new software features into the handheld device. However, SDK Innovation, the minds behind Junk Store, aim to make it an officially acknowledged Steam Deck app, saving users from having to fiddle around with settings themselves.
Per the Steam page, “Junk Store is now on Steam. This version has been completely rebuilt to eliminate its reliance on Decky Loader. You can now install your favorite games from the Epic Games Store and GOG Store directly in game mode.” This is exciting news for gamers who want everything in one place.
The developers have also mentioned their Steam Store listing on a Reddit post in the r/JunkStore community, explaining they’re using the number of ‘Add to Wishlist’ clicks to measure interest. However, there’s currently no certainty that Junk Store will be fully integrated into the official Steam library, as it still needs to undergo Valve’s software review process. Despite this, the developers see the listing approval as a quiet encouragement from Valve.
Unfortunately, Junk Store won’t be available as a free, open-source project on Steam. Developers had to rewrite the application entirely to make it compatible with SteamOS, as it no longer depends on features from Decky Loader. The pricing remains a mystery since the developers are still figuring out the costs and community interest. A launch date also hasn’t been decided, as they are limited to a small team of two people.
Despite these challenges, the developers acknowledge the significance of their endeavor. Being the first Steam Deck plugin in the app store might set a new standard, potentially benefiting gamers, developers, and the broader Steam community.
For those who are tech-savvy, the Steam version of Junk Store might not be necessary, as the same functionality can be accessed for free through Decky Loader. However, for the average user who wants hassle-free gaming, Junk Store could be a fantastic way to easily access their games purchased from other platforms without needing advanced technical know-how.
