It seems like we’re hearing about another game potentially getting the axe, with PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. being the latest contender. This title, which had a bit of an Ultraman vibe, was shrouded in mystery from the start, with precious little information ever making it to the public eye.
Does Project G.G. ring a bell for you? No worries if it doesn’t. It was first revealed back in 2020, and after that, communication about it basically stopped. Things took a turn for the uncertain when Hideki Kamiya, the co-founder of PlatinumGames and the director of the project, parted ways with the company at the tail end of 2023. Naturally, his departure raised eyebrows about the future of Project G.G. and whether it would ever materialize. Now, it seems almost certain that it won’t. If you take a trip over to the PlatinumGames website, you’ll notice a list of 10 games. You’ll find standout titles like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and the freshly announced Ninja Gaiden 4 among them.
A little sleuthing with the Wayback Machine uncovers that there used to be 22 games featured there. This list included licensed adventures like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra, as well as their solo efforts like Madworld and the unfortunate Babylon’s Fall. Although these games are no longer prominently displayed, they each still have individual pages. Project G.G., however, has been wiped from view completely, with its former URL now redirecting to the main PlatinumGames page. Big thanks to Eurogamer for catching that detail.
All signs point to Project G.G. being shelved indefinitely, which isn’t entirely shocking given Kamiya’s extended absence from the studio. PlatinumGames’ current trajectory has been a bit muddled with a notable number of staff departures, but the announcement of the new Ninja Gaiden installment at least suggests they’ll keep the lights on for a little while longer.
