Converting a game from PC to console can be a real challenge, especially when the genre feels tailor-made for PCs. But in the case of Dune Awakening, the developers made strides by designing it with controllers in mind right from the start.
Oddly enough, there’s still no word on when gamers can expect the console version. Even the PC release remains shrouded in mystery. To get some clarity on the thought process behind this multi-platform approach, I had the chance to chat with Nils Ryborg. Nils is a producer on Dune Awakening at Funcom, but his experience extends to working on the console port for Pillars of Eternity at Paradox, offering him a unique perspective.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Ryborg shared, “Oh, Pillars of Eternity! I remember the challenges we faced there with user experience. We took cues from action RPGs, particularly in movement.” He highlighted the inherent struggle with controllers in what is fundamentally a tactical game, explaining, “We came up with AI architects to help players make NPCs more autonomous, improving their decision-making and offering some guidance.”
He elaborated further, “We simplified character movement and enabled quicker decision-making for more effective real-time combat. Yet, we retained mechanics for strategic pausing. It was about weaving ARPG elements while keeping the tactical depth intact.” This was no small feat and involved tweaking UX elements like button cycling and more.
So, how did Funcom handle things differently with Dune Awakening? Did they face the same hurdles? “Starting with a console-first approach makes things easier,” Ryborg pointed out. “It’s simpler to translate that experience back to PC, whereas a game purely designed for PC with mouse and keyboard is harder to adapt.”
“Even though we’re releasing on PC initially, the console version’s UX isn’t a concern right now,” he added, pointing out the technical constraints of console hardware. “It’s all about ensuring good performance and avoiding unnecessary complications.”
For those eagerly awaiting Dune Awakening on consoles, there will be a wait. But rest assured, the console experience promises not to stray far from what PC players will enjoy.
