Ancient Dungeon VR, the beloved rogue-lite dungeon crawler, has just received an exciting update on PSVR 2 that introduces multiplayer co-op gameplay.
Launched initially in 2021 via Steam Early Access and App Lab for Quest (now discontinued), Ancient Dungeon captivated players with its single-player mode, offering over 20 hours of immersive adventures through intricate dungeons. These levels challenge players with physics-based combat against blocky wizards, skeletons, and other classic foes straight out of a D&D campaign.
Despite Quest and SteamVR versions introducing a four-player cooperative mode in mid-2024, PSVR 2 users had been left waiting for this experience. That changed with the December 2023 rollout on the Sony platform, though co-op was noticeably missing—until now. Creator Eric Thullen has finally shared the much-anticipated multiplayer update for PSVR 2, enabling up to four players to tackle procedurally-generated dungeons, tricky traps, and formidable enemies together.
During a Q&A session on Reddit, Thullen clarified that, at the moment, cross-play across different platforms isn’t available. However, he has assured fans that cross-play capability with Quest and PC VR systems is in the works and slated for a future update.
Ancient Dungeon’s journey to becoming a standout indie hit in the VR scene began with a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2020. It followed up with a well-received beta, attracting over 1,000 user reviews and boasting an impressive 4.8 out of 5 rating.
Nearly five years into its evolution, the game maintains its momentum with regular updates. Recent additions include new weapons, cosmetics, insight upgrades, extra dungeon floors, and relics—features that Thullen’s team is refining in anticipation of the game’s official 1.0 release. According to a Steam update, this milestone is still on the horizon.
For those interested, Ancient Dungeon VR is available on Steam for PC VR headsets, the Horizon Store for Quest, and the PlayStation Store for PSVR 2, all priced at a reasonable $20.
