Pixelity, a gaming studio based in Korea, has exciting news for fans of the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’re working on a new XR game that brings the beloved series into an immersive gaming experience.
In a blog post, Pixelity revealed that they’ve struck an official licensing deal with Studio Khara in Japan to develop this innovative game. The plan is to release it in three parts, covering the compelling narrative of all 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The first part of this ambitious project is already underway and is penciled in for a 2026 release.
For those of us who have been long-time fans of Evangelion, this is thrilling news. The anime was a groundbreaking piece in the ’90s, sparking a revival in the popularity of anime across Japan and eventually worldwide, leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
The storyline of Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place in 2015, which was a leap forward from its actual 1995 premiere. It chronicles the journey of Shinji Ikari, a young boy who becomes a pilot for the Evangelion—a humanoid combat weapon standing as humanity’s last hope against the enigmatic Angels that threaten Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t yet confirmed which platforms the game will be available on, they promise an immersive XR experience. Players will get to explore diverse locations, engage in the same chronological events from the show, complete missions, and participate in exhilarating battles.
One particularly appealing aspect for fans will be the ability to collaborate with various characters from the Evangelion universe. The studio aims to deliver an action-adventure experience that’s both dynamic and memorable, capturing the essence of the original anime.
Since its establishment in 2017, Pixelity has developed several VR titles, such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also in the midst of developing two other VR projects, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Although Neon Genesis Evangelion has previously been adapted for VR formats, this upcoming project marks the first time an official at-home game is being created for the series. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio, ‘Project i Can’, released an Evangelion VR experience called The Throne of Souls at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, but it was only available for a limited time. Now, fans can look forward to bringing the magic of Evangelion directly into their homes.
