Hades 2’s early access has managed to pack in so much content that one could almost mistake it for the complete game already. Just like the first Hades, this sequel offers a treasure trove of nods to Greek mythology and playful Easter Eggs. However, Hades 2 doesn’t shy away from changing the narrative slightly when it comes to the myths, avoiding some of the trickier elements. This creative license works well, given the multitude of myth variations, allowing Supergiant Games to craft a story that feels authentic yet fresh. Interestingly, they’ve introduced a unique character, the Supportive Shade.
Making its mark in the original Hades, the Supportive Shade stands out in Elysium’s arena, being the only shade consistently cheering for Zagreus. In the new Hades 2 update dubbed Warsong, this shade pops up again in the Fields of Mourning where Melinoe recognizes it as the same steadfast supporter. There’s a fan theory buzzing around that this Shade might actually be Zagreus and Melinoe’s grandfather on their mother’s side. This idea could be further explored in the new game.
In Greek mythology, the story of Persephone’s parents sees many interpretations. While Demeter is invariably her mother, the identity of her father varies – sometimes he’s Zeus, other times a mere mortal. Supergiant’s take has her father as a mortal, making Zagreus and Melinoe partly human. You can see Zagreus’ mortal side in his red blood, a stark contrast to the godly golden ichor, and in his designation as the God of Blood and Life.
Hades fans first met the Supportive Shade when Zagreus battled Theseus in Elysium. This shade stands out, waving a banner with zest. In Hades 2, after Melinoe faces Cerberus, this loyal shade shows up in the Fields of Mourning, letting players interact with it and eventually inviting it to the Crossroads.
With the Warsong Update, not only does the Supportive Shade return, but there’s also a nod to Melinoe’s lineage through new Crossroads decorations named “Toolset, Farmer’s”. The description hints at a connection to Melinoe’s supposed mortal grandfather. Melinoe remains oblivious to this link, still unaware of her grandfather’s mortal status.
Bringing back the Supportive Shade alongside an item tied to Melinoe’s family history could be more than coincidence. It adds weight to the fan theory connecting the Shade to Melinoe’s mortal ancestry. Considering Hades 2’s central conflict involves battling their Titan grandfather, having Melinoe receive unwavering support from her other grandfather, especially as a shade, would add depth to her journey and highlight her unique bond with shades. It’s a beautiful way to weave her personal history into her current quest, letting her reclaim part of her family.
