Microsoft is rolling out a significant update to Windows 11 that makes Task Manager much more effective by changing how it calculates CPU utilization—a move that could eliminate the need for third-party apps.
Recently, it seems Microsoft recognized that Task Manager’s performance metrics fall short compared to those found in third-party tools. In response, they’re releasing an update that changes how CPU utilization is calculated to align more with those robust tools, which will definitely enhance Task Manager’s effectiveness.
According to Microsoft, “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
While the specifics of how these calculations will change remain unclear, what’s certain is that Task Manager’s figures will now match the consistency of those seen on third-party platforms like HWINFO. This alignment means users won’t need to switch to external apps to get accurate CPU usage readings. However, we’ll have to wait for the update to pinpoint exactly how this will affect day-to-day usage.
In addition to these changes, Microsoft is considering those who prefer the existing method by introducing a new optional CPU Utility column in the “Details” tab. This gives users the flexibility to retain the old metrics if they choose. The update is part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, which is rolling out gradually with the 24H2 update. It’s impressive to see Microsoft making strides to enhance the consumer experience step by step.
