Today, Sony made an exciting announcement that marks a significant shift in the world of virtual reality gaming. Starting next month, the price of the PSVR 2, which works with both PS5 and PC, will drop permanently to $400.
The PSVR 2, originally priced at $550 when it launched almost two years ago, saw its anniversary come and go recently without much ado. Surprisingly, during the State of Play event a couple of weeks back, Sony didn’t mention this significant update. The price cut, effective in March, means gamers can get their hands on the headsets for $400 or €450 or £400 or ¥66,980, making it more accessible to a broader audience.
In an intriguing move, this revised price also applies to both the standard PSVR bundle, which comes with the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones, and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle. The latter originally hit the market with a $600 tag back in February 2023.
Over the past months, there have been instances where the PSVR 2 was offered at even lower prices than what we’ll see in March. For instance, back in November 2024, Sony cut down the cost of the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle to a tempting $350, suggesting even sweeter deals might be in our future.
Alongside this announcement, Sony shone a spotlight on several top-notch PSVR 2 games, such as Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion. Upcoming titles like Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk are also on the horizon. However, despite showcasing this impressive lineup, Sony has yet to fully rally behind the PSVR 2.
So far, only a select few first-party games have been released for PSVR 2, including Horizon Call of the Mountain, alongside VR modes for Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. This is somewhat in contrast to the robust offerings Sony delivered for the original PSVR from 2016, which boasted titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PlayStation VR Worlds, VR Playroom, and additional VR modes for Gran Turismo Sport and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Last August, Sony made a move that pleased PSVR 2 users by releasing a $60 PC Adapter. This addition lets users connect to a VR-ready PC, opening the door to enjoy SteamVR games like Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR, among others. Still, it seems Sony may be strategically decoupling PSVR 2 from the PS5 ecosystem, indicating potential future shifts in their approach.
If future sales mirror the impressive discounts seen during the recent holiday season, we could witness a notable boost in PSVR 2 popularity. For instance, a hefty 42% Black Friday discount brought the price down to just $232, making it a fantastic deal and an accessible gift option for gamers eager to explore both classic hits and a continuous stream of third-party games.
Update (February 27th, 2025): We’ve corrected the Euro price to €450, after initially reporting it as €550.
