Studio Fizbin, the creative team behind Reignbreaker, is set to close its doors later this month. They communicated this somber news through a statement on their website, which Game Developer picked up, revealing that operations will wind down following the launch of Reignbreaker on March 18th. The studio’s founder and CEO, Alexander Pieper, shared that this decision is a consequence of Thunderful’s move to significantly downsize internal development.
“The gaming world is going through tough times right now, and like many exceptional studios, we’ve felt its impact,” Pieper explained. He went on to detail how last November, Thunderful, their parent company, opted to cut back on internal projects. This shift, as communicated by Thunderful’s CEO Martin in their most recent quarterly update, included cuts at Studio Fizbin. Since then, they’ve been on the lookout for new ventures post-Reignbreaker, but unfortunately, none of these potential projects have panned out, forcing the team to make this tough call.
Pieper expressed sincere gratitude: “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every fan out there. Your purchases, fan art, feedback, reviews, and unyielding support have meant the world to us.” He also made sure to acknowledge their business collaborators and funding partners, including Medienboard, MfG, Creative Europe, and various federal initiatives for their invaluable support.
Moreover, Pieper reserved a special note of appreciation for the whole Fizbin team: “To those who continue with us to the end, and to those who have ventured into new territories, thank you. The essence of Fizbin, and the magic of our games, is all about the people behind them. You’ve turned this place into something extraordinary, a realm where the challenging art of game development comes to life.”
