War Thunder takes its players to the heart of mechanical warfare, whether you’re facing off in tanks, dominating the seas in battleships, or engaging in thrilling aerial dogfights. Yet, something’s always been missing: the boots on the ground. That is until now. War Thunder introduces AI-controlled infantry in what Gaijin has dubbed an April Fool’s Day surprise—a World War I mode.
Traditionally, War Thunder has specialized in the vehicle arsenals of WWII and beyond. But for a limited-time event, things are getting a historical twist. Dubbed ‘The Great War,’ this event transports players to the Western Front of WWI, offering an array of land and air vehicles from that era.
This wartime game brings in seven new vehicles, and unlocking them involves completing tasks over five days, playing for either the Allied forces (Britain, France, and the USSR) or the German Empire. Even after the event wraps up, these vehicles will remain accessible, allowing them to be enjoyed in other modes across War Thunder.
Notably, there are bonus air vehicles available that, while not unlockable, promise exciting gameplay. These include a bomber plane available to both factions, as well as formidable zeppelins capable of unleashing devastation from above.
What really sets this mode apart, though, is the introduction of something entirely fresh: infantry. AI soldiers spring into action, emerging from the trenches to engage enemy lines, and they can even threaten vehicles with grenades. They’re more than just eye candy; they are a genuine tactical element, adding a whole new layer to the engagement.
Gaijin has announced plans for “a large-scale closed beta test of infantry” soon, with The Great War serving as a sneak peek into the potential gameplay dynamics these new units will bring to the battlefield.
Fans have been clamoring for infantry in War Thunder despite its vehicular focus, making their addition in a WWI-themed April Fool’s mode both exciting and ironic. If this feature is merely a one-time event addition, Gaijin might have some frustrated fans—and a slightly irritated gaming journalist—on their hands.
The Great War event is currently live, offering a chance to jump into the fray until Monday, April 7. War Thunder remains free on Steam, making it accessible for anyone interested in experiencing a slice of World War I history.
