Intel has decided to tackle the performance issues plaguing the Arc GPUs when paired with older CPUs, a move long overdue and much anticipated by users.
Intel Addresses Performance Concerns with Arc GPUs and Legacy Ryzen and Intel Core Processors
When Intel introduced the Arc B580 and B570 GPUs, they seemed promising, especially with their competitive amount of VRAM. However, many enthusiasts were disappointed as these GPUs struggled to make a mark against their competitors, primarily due to inadequate optimizations.
The problem transcends beyond just the Intel GPU drivers. The Arc Battlemage GPUs have notably underperformed compared to their counterparts. If you recall, Hardware Unboxed was one of the first to highlight the disappointing performance of the Arc B580 when used with older processors like the Ryzen 2000 series and 9th gen Intel Core CPUs.
Intel has finally addressed this issue publicly after a long period of silence. They posted an official response on their forums, stating:
Thank you for your patience. We are aware of reports of performance sensitivity in some games when paired with older generation processors.
We have increased our platform coverage to include more configurations in our validation process, and we are continuing to investigate optimizations.
This acknowledgment suggests that Intel has been aware of the problem but delayed efforts to enhance performance. They now promise to extend optimizations to a broader range of configurations, but they stopped short of committing to a specific timeline for these improvements.
With the hardware of Arc B580 and B570 GPUs supposedly up to par with competitors’ previous-generation offerings in modern games, Intel’s focus seems to be shifting towards software updates. The underwhelming performance of these GPUs when used with Intel’s older CPUs was, to many, quite unexpected.
The hope is that upcoming patches will allow Intel to better vie for attention against AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. However, this doesn’t automatically translate to Intel gaining ground in the crowded GPU market. The Arc Battlemage GPUs remain elusive on shelves, which hinders their competitiveness, especially in the budget segment.
