Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, is reportedly setting the stage for a new battle royale game intended to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this ambitious project, which currently goes by the codename “Scout,” appears to take significant inspiration from the popular game by Respawn and EA. In fact, at one point, the artwork for “Scout” was so closely aligned with Apex Legends that it was initially used as a project thumbnail. Additionally, some reports suggest striking similarities between the characters in both games. It seems this game has been quietly progressing behind the scenes for quite some time.
The apparent strategy here is that Ubisoft aims to woo players away from Apex Legends, especially given that Electronic Arts has acknowledged a slight downturn in the game’s financial performance. “The goal seems to be tapping into the declining player base of Apex and filling the gap in the market with another hero-based battle royale,” according to one source.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first venture into the competitive and free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, although it had a short lifespan, lasting only 18 months. More recently, Ubisoft also decided to end development on its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by late 2024.
On a related note, fans of Apex Legends might find solace in knowing that a revamped version, dubbed Apex Legends 2.0, is in the pipeline and expected to debut sometime after April 2026.
