Bungie has unveiled its brand-new extraction shooter, Marathon, giving us an exciting glimpse into its gameplay for the first time. Set your calendars because Marathon is slated to launch on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on September 23rd, 2025.
In this thrilling game, you take on the role of a Runner—cybernetic mercenaries gifted with unique abilities. Teaming up with friends, you’ll form squads of up to three players to confront hostile AI security forces while competing against other Runner groups. The objective? Gather weapons, implants, and gear throughout your mission. If you manage to make it out alive, you can keep everything you’ve pulled together for future adventures.
As part of a three-player team, you’ll dive into a zone with one main mission: loot as much treasure as you can and escape in one piece. You’ll face a variety of threats, including the ever-present AI security units and rival teams. Should you survive, the bounty you accumulate remains yours for subsequent runs. Fancy a tougher challenge? Solo players can opt to face off against teams alone and attempt to extract every last piece of loot solo.
For those eager to catch a sneak peek, we’ve got the Marathon Gameplay Reveal Trailer right at the top. Also, there’s an extended Gameplay Overview Trailer a bit further down. Even though it’s still early days, what we’ve seen so far looks very promising!
Though the official release might be some way off, there’s an opportunity to dive into Marathon even sooner. A Closed Alpha kicks off on April 23rd. If you’re itching to get in on the action, head over to the official Marathon Discord server to get signed up.
