## Introducing New Dynamics
The concept of integrating a card system into a first-person shooter was inspired by sports leagues, where rule changes keep games engaging and unpredictable. Chang Xin, FragPunk’s producer and a sports enthusiast, drew inspiration from innovations like Europe’s King’s League, which spices up soccer with item-based strategies. By embracing randomness, even a game demanding fairness becomes more thrilling, spotlighting a promising space for audience capture.
Similarly, the competitive FPS scene often prioritizes balanced play, which can lead to repetitive matches. Chang Xin noticed how predictability leads strong players to consistently dominate. FragPunk’s Shard Cards are designed to disrupt this cycle, adding unpredictability and enriching tactical choices for all players.
## Crafting the Cards
Developing Shard Cards came with its challenges, particularly in ensuring game balance. Initially, Bad Guitar Studio’s prototypes allowed players to tweak game rules, focusing too heavily on core mechanics, which stifled creativity. Recognizing the need for flexibility, the team shifted to a more inventive approach. For example, the “Dimensional Travel” card originally let players switch between worlds, but technical hurdles kept them from reality. Instead, they made players invisible to enemies—a simple yet effective solution.
## Balancing Fun and Fair Play
A concern was whether these cards might compromise competition, but the design aims to add suspense and variety without undermining core shooting skills. Responses from new players praised the card system for introducing enjoyable variety, reducing predictability, and enhancing their gaming experience—unlike traditional FPS games, which often frustrate newcomers due to skill gaps.
Each card comes with a tactical layer, inviting players to craft unique strategies by combining Shard Cards. For instance, the “Blade Master + Turtleback” combo provides bullet protection from all sides. Ranked modes focus on strategy-enhancing cards, maintaining competitive integrity through a ban-pick system that promotes tactical thinking.

While FragPunk offers various game modes, its heart lies in Shard Clash, a bomb defusal mode. The design team aimed to innovate within this genre, using cards to transform gameplay.
