Team Asano, best known for their work on Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler, is gearing up for a plethora of releases in 2025. This exciting news comes straight from a conversation with Tomoya Asano, the head honcho at the studio, who shared insights into their plans for the coming year. The team has made a name for itself with the HD-2D graphics engine, a tool they’ve used for several Square Enix remakes, including the anticipated Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. With this in mind, it seems likely that their 2025 lineup could feature both fresh game concepts and reimaginations of classic titles.
Earlier this year, the gaming community buzzed with rumors from a known leaker hinting at a potential sequel in the works by Team Asano. The strongest contenders? A new chapter in the Bravely Default saga, following the release of Bravely Default 2 back in February 2021, and a sequel to Live A Live, which enjoyed a successful remake run. While other projects like Triangle Strategy and Various Daylife have emerged from the team, the latter doesn’t seem a likely candidate for expansion due to its underwhelming reception.
In a chat with 4Gamer that Gematsu translated, Tomoya Asano revealed plans for 2025. According to him, Team Asano is prepping a slew of projects, including the confirmed remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2, both set to follow in the HD-2D footsteps of the Dragon Quest 3 Remake. Asano mentioned “various” releases, hinting that the offerings could be more plentiful than just the Dragon Quest package, which will launch as a single product.
Following the Live A Live remake announcement in 2022, Square Enix confirmed that more HD-2D transformations were in development. Though Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D was already on the list, the first two in the series weren’t. So, it’s plausible there are undisclosed games in the queue, set to receive stunning HD-2D updates. Many of Square Enix’s beloved classics could make a return in this form, potentially enriching the Switch 2’s game collection in 2025.
While Asano’s intentions are thrilling for lovers of Square Enix’s classic RPGs, he has previously stirred excitement without substantial follow-through. Back in February 2024, he teased the Bravely Default fanbase, hinting, “we will be able to tell you something about the Bravely series this year.” As the year closes, it seems unlikely that any groundbreaking news will surface in 2024, leaving fans hopeful for developments in 2025.
