If you’ve ever imagined diving into No Man’s Sky with the enthusiasm of a dinosaur-loving palaeontologist who somehow ended up with Jennifer Aniston, today’s update is tailor-made for you. Hello Games has just rolled out the Relics update, and the spotlight is on collecting enormous alien fossils.
This newest addition comes on the heels of another major update earlier in January, which introduced “billions of new stars and planets” including massive gas giants and bizarre flying squid that surely have a vendetta against overzealous fishing.
In a recent blog post and accompanying video, the Relics update is all about space palaeontology. Think of it like Ross Geller from Friends on one of his fossil-obsessed adventures—just in space. When Ross isn’t spiraling over a sandwich or donning a holiday armadillo costume, he’s busy with those ancient bones.
Now, you get to channel your inner David Schwimmer, traversing the galaxy to uncover “hundreds of unique bones” and piece them together in your museum. Imagine trying to convince the eclectic alien species in No Man’s Sky that their ancestors were quirky, advanced beings with questionable dental hygiene. The audacity of mixing and matching fossils could lead to some rather unique displays.
But hold on a second—there’s more to this update. It introduces Reanimated Guardians, these massive stone lifeforms who awaken by fossil sites to protect them from curious Travellers. Forget about lumbering stone faces; these guys are your cool robotic defenders.
Additionally, you’ll come across Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies—ancient guardians from long-gone alien civilizations keeping a silent watch over relic-laden worlds. They could be the highlight of a planetary expedition.
Moreover, you might stumble upon still animate fossils like Titanic Boneworms, or other “skeletal fauna” on planets rich in bones and some intriguing purple star systems. At Space Stations, you’ll find Fossil Collectors eager to trade or purchase your unique fossil collections. There’s even the option to cook using bones as a quirky ingredient!
If all that intrigues you, consider joining the Galactic Palaeology Society. The new expedition via the Relics update offers nifty rewards, including a jetpack made of sentient rock, a transformation feature to appear like said rock, and even a skeletal pet companion.
