Hey everyone! It’s fantastic to connect with you on behalf of The Game Kitchen, alongside Dotemu, Koei Tecmo Games, and Team Ninja. Today, we’re thrilled to pull back the curtain on a fresh twist in Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. We’re introducing a second original playable character hailing from the time-honored rivals of the Hayabusa Clan: the famed Black Spider Clan.
In this update, we’re excited to delve into the creative process that brought this character to life, share what players can anticipate from this addition, and highlight some gameplay features we’re particularly eager for you to explore.
When we embarked on developing new characters for Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, we entertained a captivating idea: How exhilarating would it be to play as an enemy faction member? It’s a rare opportunity in our favorite series, those special moments when a game lets you explore the perspective of those on the opposite side. The Black Spider Clan has always fascinated us with their intense style and memorable personas in the 3D Ninja Gaiden games. So, we thought, why not resurrect them with a fresh twist? And that’s how Kumori came into being.
Kumori stands as a proud kunoichi from the Black Spider Clan, providing a riveting contrast to Kenji, the game’s other lead character. While Kenji continues his training under the legendary Ryu Hayabusa, Kumori has already climbed to the pinnacle within her clan. With her clan nearly on the brink of ruin, she bears the responsibility of restoring and safeguarding their legacy. Kumori is ruthless, relying on both contemporary weaponry and demonic powers to achieve her goals. Unlike traditional warriors, she’s guided solely by the pursuit of victory.
Kumori differs from Kenji, who uses a classic katana for close combat, by wielding kunai. This choice gives her extended range, swift attack speeds, and the capability to strike from virtually any angle or surface, making her an exceptional combatant, especially in complex battles or when facing enemies tucked away in hard-to-reach spots.
Despite their contrasting methods, Kenji and Kumori are united by shared values: a strong sense of loyalty, honor, and duty to their clans. Although they come from opposing factions, they embody a new generation of warriors influenced by their heritage but not restricted by it. Their destinies collide during a significant event as they face an overwhelming demonic force, trapping them in a nightmarish realm. In a twist of fate, they make a daring choice to combine their strengths, fully aware their clans would never approve of such an alliance. This unlikely partnership is both a powerful tool and a double-edged sword, altering their futures forever.
As bonded warriors, players can enjoy the strengths of both characters. Their arsenal, skills, and a new energy resource, Ki, combine into a formidable force. Gathering Ki from adversaries allows Kumori’s spirit to call upon powerful Spider Weapons like the Kama or the Chakram, which can cut through obstacles and foes, expanding her attack possibilities tremendously.
The duo’s combined fury powers intense attacks. With each defeated enemy succumbing to a Hypercharged attack, their rage crescendos. Once it peaks, players unleash a breathtaking, screen-sweeping assault, an impressive display of vengeance and might. Staying true to Ninja Gaiden’s essence, the action remains swift, seamless, and relentless. There’s no downtime for character swaps. Instead, combat flows naturally, keeping the adrenaline rush consistent and unending.
Strategically equipping your characters is crucial. Collecting Golden Scarabs lets you unlock enhancements, talismans, and novel techniques. Kenji benefits from passive boosts, such as enhanced melee damage and sturdier defenses, while Kumori takes a different approach with her Shadow Arts, unlocking new Spider Weapons and potent Ragebound Arts that cater to various strategies and combat styles.
In the demon world, Kumori’s physical form is imprisoned, with her spirit as Kenji’s companion. However, through Demonic Altars, she can temporarily regain her physical presence, interacting with an otherworldly realm and unveiling unseen paths. But her time in this form is limited, urging players to quickly solve intricate puzzles and face intense challenges before the clock runs out. These segments enrich the game’s dynamics, blending platforming with strategic combat to deepen the experience.
We’re thrilled to share this sneak peek of Kumori with you. We eagerly anticipate your journey through both the Hayabusa and Black Spider Ninja paths in this enthralling new chapter of Ninja Gaiden.
Look out for Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in Summer 2025.
