Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios dropped the news that their much-anticipated game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, is set to launch on June 13th for PS5 and PC. However, fans expecting to dive into the horror via PSVR 2 are left in suspense, as any mention of VR support for the PlayStation platform has mysteriously disappeared from all official communications.
Back in 2024, gamers at PAX West got a taste of what was to come with a PSVR 2 demo of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. It appeared that Steel Wool Studios was aiming to deliver a blend of virtual reality and traditional screen gameplay, promising an experience that would terrify both VR and non-VR players alike.
Steel Wool Studios, which stepped into the gaming scene in 2012 and later gained traction with a $5 million investment from HTC in 2016, is no stranger to virtual reality. They’ve crafted well-received VR titles such as Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue (2023), FNAF: Help Wanted (2019), and its sequel FNAF: Help Wanted 2 (2024).
Yet now, with the announcement of the game’s release date, the absence of PSVR 2 support from promotional materials has raised questions. Archived versions of the PlayStation Store page had previously suggested optional PSVR 2 compatibility, but any reference to it has vanished. The sole nod to VR capabilities came in an official PlayStation release date announcement post from February 12th, which has since been quietly taken down.
As it stands, Steel Wool Studios has remained tight-lipped about whether or when PSVR 2 support might be announced or even part of a future update. The curiosity extends to the PC versions slated for release on both the Epic Games Store and Steam — will these editions surprise us with VR options as well?
We reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarity, but haven’t yet received word. Once we do, we’ll shoot you an update on whether this is a strategic delay in the VR launch or a shift in direction for the release altogether.
